This post is unlike the others. It is not a geeky tech-post.
You may not know that I am actually a Navy veteran. Besides some tactical and military skills, here are the few other things I have learned.
1. Life is not fair and it never will be.
- In the navy, I have met a lot of people. They are all from different types of background. I would never have met them if it wasn't because of joining the military. All my navy brothers have their own stories. No matter how difficult to hear those stories, we are still on the same ship and we "live life hard".
2. You are more capable than what you expect.
- Even if I don't have motion sickness, I still puke so much during the sailing. However, within a few months your body will get used to it and you will be both mentally and physically stronger little by little.
3. "No Freedom" is what makes people sad.
- I didn't expect that losing my freedom could be such a suffocated feeling. People feel depressed of losing the free will of choice.
4. Be humble and keep low profile.
- The quieter you become the more you can hear. Envy is a dangerous thing. If you are doing well stay humble and keep low profile might be the best way to handle things.
5. Neither anybody can nor will help you.
- Nobody can understand or care about what you have been through. Only you can help yourself. All you need to do is to man the hell up and deal with it. All the sergeants will tell you during your training that you are not a freaking Abercrombie's model, you are hardcore! You can live today happily or sadly. It is completely up to you.
To wrap it up, There is a Chinese-Taiwanese song, "Sailor", the lyric goes like this:
"He (sailor) says
In the storm, this little pain is nothing
Wipe you tear Have no fear At least we still have dreams"
A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.
Be tough, stay positive.
